Arnel Baconaje is without doubt one of the Philippines' best and most technical boxers.
He is also one of the most difficult to match!
"The Silencer" is a very skillful and solidly built 130, with a big KO ratio, and unfortunately, had three opponents drop out en route to TIGER 2O22.
Enter saviour Leonardo Doronio !
The internationally experienced, and former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner, resumed from a lay off in December, and produced a really solid win against Jimmy Borbon at 140 super lightweight. Doronio looked "heavy" in that match, and despite his strong showing against an improved Borbon, gave the appearance that a drop in weight class would really suit.
So when the call went out for a quality opponent for the much ducked Baconaje, Leonardo Doronio was quick to answer. But how to make a fight happen between fighters two divisions apart?
Simple - let's meet in the middle !

Palawan beach boy Lorence Rosas has arrived in Manila, and is already busy in camp for next month's TIGER 2022.
The x-factor southpaw, labeled the "Pride of Palawan", last fought in December against a much bigger Virgel Vitor, and there was plenty to like about his performance.
Rosas will drop to 126 to take on the promising Jestine Ace Tesoro, a winner of 5 bouts. This is a great featherweight match up, and it will be interesting to see how Tesoro's height and skills fare against the unpredictable southpaw style of Rosas.

We have also added (finally !) a women's bout, where Linn Sandstrom from Australia (by way of Sweden !) takes on Aisah Alico in a flyweight contest.

Michael Dasmarinas has been boxing from the time he was a kid, and since turning professional at the age of 19, has amassed an incredible 30 wins, many at the highest level (20KO). The champ, known as Hot ‘N Spicy, is rightfully regarded as one of the Philippines’ marquee boxing talents, and in 2021 he shared the ring with perhaps the greatest pound for pound fighter on the planet, Naoya “the Monster” Inoue for a world title shot.
The outstanding 29 year old fighter returned to the ring in Manila last December, where he took on the rugged Ernie Saulong. The match was meant to be “stay in shape” bout for Dasmarinas, as he awaited another big international match, however things (as are often the case in boxing!) didn’t go to plan!!
The combatants Dasmarinas and Saulong clashed heads early in the fight, forcing Saulong to retire prior to round four courtesy of an accidental head butt. The match was deemed a NO CONTEST! Ughhh!
Never one to dwell on misfortune, the champion Dasmarinas is back next month for TIGER 2022. And in the best traditions of the tiger, expect to see this pinoy boxing great full of renewed zest and energy for all the challenges of the new and great year!

Nguyen Van Hai was pulled from his TIGER 2022 bout with mad dog Jino Rodrigo. At the time, it was expected that he undertake 10 days quarantine. Too long! Philippines' loss is Vietnam's gain, and the Hanoi fighter returns to the ring March 26 in HCMC. The comeback marks more than two years since Nguyen Van Hai and Charly Suarez locked horns at Hoan Kiem Lake back in October 2019.
Ronnie Baldonado claims that the Wonder Boy has had it easy in his unbeaten run, and has been given way too much respect from previous rivals. Baldonado, who has not fought since 2019, has been working hard on skills, strength and conditioning in the down time, and promises a more physical athlete in his return bout. Now 25, the former bantam has really developed solid muscle in the gym, and is convinced that 122 pounds is his new home! Those that have seen the recent efforts of "Jong Jong " are true believers also, saying that he is far more energetic and lethal at the new weight.
Baldonado is so confident, he wanted a big match at super bantam, and surely there is none bigger out there right now, than a WBA Asia title shot against boxing prodigy Carl Jammes Martin !

Mindanao lays claims to being the most prolific breeding ground of talented boxers anywhere on planet Earth ! And this compelling truth is reinforced with the knowledge that four of the six main event fighters are from the warrior isle! Charly Suarez and Ronnie Baldonado hold key roles in both WBA titles at TIGER 2022, and despite facing stiff opposition, and will be out to show that very definitely, DAVAO DOES IT BETTER! Suarez sees a victory over Tomjune Mangubat as a catalyst to his world title aspirations, and is set to deliver a career best performance.
Ronnie Baldonado has already been dismissed as an underdog against the unbeaten Carl Jammes Martin, but he holds no regard for the peanut gallery. Jhong Jhong will be a revelation at the new weight of 122, and has no doubts that Wonder Boy will be in a world of trouble come fight time!
ps those who said Baldonado is too small, compare him to 130 pound Charly Suarez and do a rethink!

Just confirmed!!
Ronnie “Jong Jong” Baldonado will take on Carl Jammes Martin for the WBA Asia title in Manila on Saturday March 12. The Mindanao fighter boasts a superb record of 15 wins and 2 losses, and returns to the ring for the first time since late 2019. The solidly built Baldonado has a wealth of experience against varied styles of opponents, including international fights in China and Japan. Winning on the road in China is never easy, but Jong Jong made sure his efforts were not in vain, by knocking out his two opponents in Beijing!
Ronnie Baldonado jumps in weight class to take the Wonder Boy challenge, but the strong orthodox fighter looks a nice foil to Martin’s southpaw magic. He lacks nothing in the power department either, having put 9 of his previous victim’s to the sword. Baldonado will come to Manila all guns blazing, and he certainly won’t be fazed by the reputation of Carl Jammes Martin, nor his unbeaten record!
Expect fireworks here, as Baldonado will have the self belief that he will be the first to put this Wonder Boy on his butt!

Great news for fight fans is that unbeaten Omega Cebu prospect Carlo Bacaro will make a surprise appearance on the undercard of Suarez / Mangubat this March. Bacaro at only 22 years of age, is already one of the most exciting strikers in Philippines boxing, having landed 6 knockouts in his 8 victories thus far. His appearance at TIGER 2022 will mark a full year since his previous bout, a defining match against the unbeaten Allan Villanueva. The Cebu boxer showed exemplary skills and maturity in that clash, ousting the classy Villanueva via an unanimous decision.
Carlo Bacaro is a stable mate of main event fighter Tomjune Mangubat, and this pair are two of the very best talents emerging from the very strong Omega Cebu stable.

The very talented southpaw Lorence Rosas returned to the ring after an extended break last year, and despite his best laid plans, the comeback proved to be full of unexpected challenges. Palawan is one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines, renowned for its white beaches, clear waters and amazing biodiversity.
But if you are a boxer, it sucks!
No reputable gyms, and no events for aspiring fighters, even quality sparring is near impossible to find. And as if the location isn't difficult enough for a boxer like Rosas, Palawan had some surprises in store last December. Typhoon Odette ravaged Puerto Princessa, and unfortunately, the house of the Rosas family was destroyed. Whilst many others spent Christmas around the tree, Lorence languished in a tent! Not one to be deterred, the very resilient Lorence Rosas attacks the new year with renewed zest, returning for TIGER 2022 on March 12th. And after much logistics, the "Pride of Palawan " has been matched !
Jestine Ace Tesoro is a stylish young fighter on an upswing. Despite losing his most recent bout to the lethal JonJon Estrada, Tesoro had the Wolverine wearing wobbly boots during their epic encounter. This match up will prove to be a really interesting measure of Rosas, who drops to the more suitable featherweight division. In fact if things go to plan, expect to see the talented Palawan boxer settle back at 122 pounds in the near future.

Meanwhile, with an eye to the future, amateur hopefuls Bong Lipata, Raizen Jhay Dela Fuente, and Fernando Olivar are ready to steal all the attention come February 12. These boys are still only teens, and are working hard on their fitness and skills to forge a pro career later on.
JonJon Estrada is back to work, and has his sights firmly on his next big opponent, ultra gifted CDO boxer Jess Rhey Waminal. Estrada, known as "the Wolverine", has achieved cult status courtesy of his "don't die wondering" fighting style.
JonJon Estrada has perfected a low, stalking attack that has opponents constantly retreating, often to a violent demise. His record of 13 knockouts from his 14 wins paints a stark picture, as does his ominous recent form. The Wolverine had a blistering 2021, winning his last three bouts with stoppages that would get most men arrested !
Australian trainer Tony Del Vecchio also sung the praises of JonJon Estrada recently :
" I love the pinoy style, they are always very physical, combative and exciting. They turn up to entertain, and to hurt. I have seen some big hitters in the Philippines, but I swear, this guy JonJon Estrada is the scariest puncher I have seen ! The Philippines' most esteemed amateur Charly Suarez was well known for winning multiple Asian and SEA games gold medals, even representing his country at the RIo 2016 Olympics.
But since turning pro in 2019, the "King's Warrior" has looked nothing short of unstoppable, winning nine fights in quick succession, with six of the vanquished finishing on the canvas.
At an exhibition event in Hanoi Vietnam in late 2019, commentators labelled Suarez as in "the top five on the planet" in his chosen weight division. That high praise seems warranted. Read on!
Despite Suarez's loss in Rio, the performance shone a light on his potential to tear up the world pro ranks in the near future.
The pinoy star lost a contentious split decision at the 2016 Olympics, even though he appeared to win ALL three rounds (and actually was scored that way on one of the judges cards). What was very obvious was that Suarez landed the more telling shots, and further, that he would be way better suited to a longer round format than his tiring rival.
And the opponent? Well here's the kicker !
It was British champion Joe Cordina, who is now 14 and 0 as a pro, and currently sits top twenty in the world!
Charly Suarez is without peer as the Philippines best boxer, his skills are ethereal. He is now fully immersed in the rough and tough pro fight game, and while skills pay the bills, this pursuit is clearly very different to the amateurs!
Suarez tackles a regional title in only his tenth bout, and a big win will no doubt propel him up the world rankings.
Standing in his way?

The very talented southpaw Lorence Rosas returned to the ring after an extended break last year, and despite his best laid plans, the comeback proved to present significant challenges!
"The Pride of Palawan" had to overcome a bout of COVID, a cancelled fight, and multiple quarantines, yet still managed to secure fights against two of the very best fighters in the Philippines. Impressively, Rosas took these bouts at a heavier weight class in order to "fight" his way back into the rankings. His most recent performance against giant super featherweight Virgel Vitor was quality, and he gave the top class Bohol boxer total hell from start to finish.
And as if the year hadn't been difficult enough, returning home to Palawan in December had more surprises in store. WAR DOG PRIMED TO STOP SUAREZ
Outstanding prospect Tomjune Mangubat is primed to give a career best performance on March 5th , when he headlines in Paranaque, Manila at “TIGER 2022” .
Mangubat will be fighting for the WBA Asia bragging rights, and the opposition surely doesn’t get any bigger than boxing royalty himself, the “King’s Warror” Charly Suarez. The Cebu based boxer known as “War Dog” heads to Manila armed with not only an intimidating career resume, but a purple patch of recent and devastating victories.
Tomjune Mangubat grew up in the mountains of Bukidnon, Mindanao - a place that has proven to be an assembly line for producing top fighters. Mangubat was top echelon from the start, winning local and national titles before turning pro at the age of 18. And it was no surprise that he would transition seamlessly to the pro ranks. This kid was big and rangy, had plenty of grit, and was rapidly refining his amateur skills to become a hurtful puncher. War Dog quickly earned a reputation as both technical and dangerous, winning 9 of his first 10 fights with thunderous knockouts. The signs were there from the start that the Omega Boxing Gym prodigy was something special. Significantly, he has showed the ominous signs of bigger things to come, and with every match, he has shown constant improvements in all facets of his performance.
Late in 2019, we were given a valuable insight into the mettle of the rapidly improving Mangubat when he suffered a split decision loss to Korea’s #1 fighter Jong Seon Kang.
The match was quality from the opening bell, underscored by a massive work rate and constant power punching by both fighters. Whilst many consider that Mangubat was “very unlucky” not to get the decision, it is worth noting that his Korean opponent was the very same that recently knocked out top class pinoy Pete Apolinar. War Dog was most definitely the dominant fighter in this epic clash, but rather than dwell on the unfortunate scoring, he has simply gone from strength to strength!
Tomjune Mangubat shapes as another significant road block to Charly Suarez’s world title aspirations. His four wins in 2021 foreshadow the destructive form that he will bring to Manila this March. All four were top opponents, yet all received one sided beat downs - three resulting in brutal knockouts. Only the rugged Ernie Sanchez survived on his feet, but it is fair to say that he was comprehensively bashed in an unanimous win for the War Dog.
Mangubat’s most recent performance, significantly, was also his best thus far. The match was held in October last year, against the highly promising and unbeaten Allan Villanueva. This was a keenly anticipated clash in Cebu, as Villanueva had rightful claims to victory, sporting 11 and 0 (8 KO) credentials. But Mangubat was just brutal from the start, mixing technical prowess with hard core physicality. The Bukidnon boy controlled range from the opening bell, setting the tempo going forward, and also on the back foot. He really befuddled Villanueva with wis variety of high and low punches, but it was his quality body punching that really dismantled his opponent, and the match finished with another clinical stoppage for the War Dog.
In what is without doubt the biggest local derby match of the year, you have the Philippines’ best boxer Charly Suarez, taking on perhaps the Philippines’ most dangerous , young and improving fighter in Tomjune Mangubat. Whilst no one disputes the pedigree of Suarez, there are naysayers that maintain he left his assault on the world rankings a little bit too late.
Will this be pivotal match where Suarez shows he is getting a little “old” ?? If there is anyone who can put that theory to the test on March 5th, it is certainly the War Dog Tomjune Mangubat!

Fight card announcement coming soon!
This just got made, and WBA approved only minutes ago!
Roldan Aldea is sidelined with injury, and champion Omega Cebu fighter Tomjun Mangubat has siezed his opportunity to continue his ominous winning streak. Mangubat is a hot young prospect with not just a great record, but boasting plenty of firepower. The imposing fighter has showed the making of something special, resolving 3 of last 4 impressive wins with scary knockouts.
The WBA were quick to recognise the great potential of Mangubat, and along with a glowing endorsement, were quick to approve the Bukidnon native for the huge WBA Asia battle with Suarez.
Big thanks go out to our partners the Elorde group, and our friends at the Omega Boxing Gym in Cebu for putting together this epic match up.
Roldan Aldea acquired WBA ASIA Super Featherweight title in Papua New Guinea on April 25, 2021. In considering pandemic situation, WBA ASIA has maintained his champion status despite of over due date with long-term inactivities.
Roldan was supposed to defend his title against Amateur veteran Chalie Suarez on March 5, 2022. However, Roldan got an injury that he could not go ahead for this fight. Through this, WBA ASIA decided to reactivate this division as follow;
Due to Roldan’s injury & long-term inactivities, Roldan Aldea will be classified as “In Recess” status. And, Chalie Suarez team will hold the WBA ASIA Super Featherweight title match against another opponent on March 5 as scheduled. The winner of this fight would try to make a defense match against Roldan Aldea if Roldan recovers from his injury. In this Super Featherweight division, WBA ASIA EAST champion is another Amateur veteran, Mongolian prospect Tsendbaatar Erdenebat. And, WBA ASIA SOUTH title will be held in Dubai on upcoming February by Highland Promotions.
Super Featherweight division might be the most busy division for WBA ASIA in the early of this year, 2022.
The sport of boxing can throw up unusual and ambiguous results. Some would go further and argue inept - often even corrupt! And it is also an unfortunate reality that those outside the ring, those that adjudicate the results, often lack the resolve and the ability of the combatants inside the ropes! Ben “the Sniper” Ligas returns on March 5 hot on the heels of a superb 2021.
Ligas was fortunate to engage in three fantastic matches during the year, starting with a hard earned but deserved win in February against a really durable Alphoe Dagayloan. This match was nonstop punching, a smattering of skills, and really good moments for both fighters.
July saw Ligas take on outstanding prospect Miel Fajardo, and in what appeared to be a match too tough to pick on paper, the match fulfilled every expectation and then some. In what could have been easily “Fight of the Year”, Fajardo was equally energetic and brutal, putting The Sniper under constant duress. To his credit, Ligas’ composure and cool counter punching redressed the scoring imbalance, and signalled that he is a boxer of some promise. Fajardo had firepower on tap, and showed that he is a handful for any opponent, and he definitely has a big future.
Robbing jeepneys is not legal, but how about robbing boxers?
Ben Ligas ventured to Cebu in late October, and took on the unbeaten and feisty April Jay Abne. This was a really good quality action match, and predictably, Abne brought lots of energy to keep it entertaining. It must be said that Ligas technically took his opponent to school, and scored a comprehensive win against a more raw, yet willing opponent, It was a nice fight from Abne, who did his best to stay in the contest till the end, and did enjoy good moments of his own. His effort to take 3 rounds from Ligas shows promise of things to come. The official “result” was an unfortunate distraction to a great match between Abne and Ligas, and a sad reminder of what is all too common in boxing these days.
That was then, and this is now, and the big and breaking news is that the Sniper Ben Ligas is back March 5th. No sour grapes or hard luck stories, just big smiles and lots of heart, ensuring that you are going to see something special very soon!
Lorenz "Cerberus" Ladrada kicks off his 2022 campaign alongside an all star cast this coming March in Paranaque, Manila.Beware the three headed dog!
The too hard to tame, the very wild and unruly Jino Rodrigo, was left seething after the cancellation of his fight with Jhack "the Fat" Tepora. Rodrigo looked ripped and ready for a war with Tepora, only for the match to be lost on the scales.
The man known as the "Silent Beast" put in a great show when he visited Vietnam in early 2019, and has been keen to trade shots with a Vietnam fighter ever since.
Jino Rodrigo gets his new year's wish come true on March 5th, when he takes on the Hanoi hardman Nguyen Van Hai. The Viet is a legend in his country, and loves to fight. So much so, that he jumped at the opportunity to rise in weight class to tackle the bigger Rodrigo. And he is a Rodrigo fan! After seeing Jino fight in Vietnam, his comments were " Very good! Lots of action! I like!"
Jino Rodrigo looked awesome in recent sparring with Philippines #1 Joe Noynay, and that preparation is now in the bottle for March 5th. True to his name, we won't hear big words from Rodrigo, but you can be sure that the Silent Beast will uncork that bottle for the Vietnam fighter Nguyen Van Hai when he steps into the ring in Manila in 2022!
Carl Jammes Martin closed the year with a gritty win over champion Mark Anthony Geraldo. It was a contest for the Philippines title, and regarded as the first significant step up for the Wonder Boy.
He passed the test with flying colours!!.
Geraldo applied non stop pressure throughout their epic match, and it was a mature performace by Martin to keep a cool head. Ultimately, it was the accuracy and crispness of the counter punch that swayed the judges in favour of Wonder Boy, and it proved to be a top quality title bout.
What's next for the boxing prodigy Carl Jammes Martin?
Stay tuned, but be ready for some big news coming this March 5th !
Arnel Baconaje "The Silencer" is set to return March 2022 in a more uncompromising, brutal form, than ever before !
Baconaje enjoyed a breakout year, with three impressive wins over Jay Quidlat, Ivor Lastrilla and Danny Tampipi. He then ventured to Russia, taking a loss to the unbeaten Ivan Kozlovsky, for the WBC Asia title. The match proved to be more of a "hands full" experience for Arnel, as it was contested at two full divisions above his normal weight class.
Arnel Baconaje ranks as one of the Philippines most classy boxers, but he also boasts plenty in the power department. The fighter from Iloilo has racked up 11 knockouts in his 14 wins, and he is looking to continue on that rampaging path!
A real exponent of working high and low, Baconaje knows full well how to break down an opponent.
And when he lands the telling shots, well, as this aptly monikered boxer demonstrates, the SILENCE IS DEAFENING!
Richard "the Beast" Pumicpic looks to ramp things up this coming March, after a quiet but successful 2021. Pumicpic stopped excellent local fighter Landy Cris Leon in May, and Leon subsequently had a win over Jhunriel Ramonal, consolidating the merit of the victory.
The Beast then travelled to the United States, and incurred a narrow loss at the hands of world top 20 Abraham Nova. Pumicpic had the hotshot Nova wobbled at various stages of the match, and no doubt this was a bout within the pinoy's grasp had it been taken on greater notice.
Richard the BEAST Pumicpic returns revamped in March 2022 and makes this simple pledge :
"YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET! "
"The Cobra" set to strike hard in early 2022 ! Southpaw stealth and savagery !
WBA Asia title
Charly Suarez v Roldan Aldea
Watch your step!
Michael Pengue has been a regular fixture at VSP and Victory8 events in Vietnam. The Aussie boxer was outstanding in his performances for the World team, so it gave us all at VSP a lot of gratification and pride when Pengue raised the WBC Australasian belt recently.
Mickey Pengue had way too few opportunities to showcase his skills since 2019, but his WBC win was a really staunch reminder of what this talented fighter is capable of when in form. Jorge Kapeen proved to be a quality opponent, and he was the measuring stick that qualified it was a great return for Pengue to grind out an emphatic unanimous win.
Pengue, who is trained by Tony Del Vecchio at the world famous Bondi Boxing Club, will now take a well earned break, before setting sights on some bigger opportunities in 2022.
World team fighter and Vietnam nemesis Jye Lane Taylor returns to the ring at the Star Centre in Sydney tonight.
It is the first time the "Fast Lane" has being sighted since June this year, when he knocked out Aussie Paul Roberts in impressive fashion.
Boxing fans will remember Victory8 Hanoi 2019, where Jye Lane Taylor put on a clinic against quality Vietnam team member Pham Duc Doan. Jye is one of the best prospects in Australian boxing, and everyone at VSP is wishing him lots of luck in tonight's battle with Manuer Matet.

Vietnam's Nguyen Van Hai makes a dream come true for the rugged and too hard to tame pinoy Jino Rodrigo, who makes this special request:
"I WANT A VIETNAM FIGHTER!"
The King's Warrior Charly Suarez does more of the "Walk the Walk" when he tackles the outstanding Roldan Aldea for the WBA Asia title. Suarez has been on a rampaging path up the world rankings, and the non believers are becoming quieter and quieter! Be in zero doubt, SUAREZ is the Philippines BEST FIGHTER, so don't miss the chance to see an icon of the sport this March in Manila.
MICHAEL PENGUE NOW A WBC CHAMP !
Big congratulation to one of the most popular boxers to compete in Vietnam at VSP events. Mickey Pengue was twice a World Team member at the big Victory8 shows, and Vietnam fighters commented that the style of Pengue was their favourite amongst the visiting team.Michael Pengue was part of a crack international squad that fought in Vietnam in late 2019, and included pinoys Charly Suarez, Jenel Lausa and Virgel Vitor.
Joseph Parker 30-2 (21 KO's) wins a 12 round war against Derek Chisora 32-12 (23 KO's). The judges scored it 114-112, 115-111 and 115-110 all in favour of Parker.
Vietnamese lightweight Nguyen Van Hai (2-0, 1 KO) has been challenged to fight dangerous Pinoy “The Silent Beast” Jino Rodrigo of Antipolo, Rizal in March; and the tough challenge has been accepted, said VSP Boxing Promotions earlier today.
The fight will fire up the ring as part of an exciting event in March in Manila, headlined by unbeaten hard-hitting Davaeño super featherweight “King’s Warrior” Charly Suarez (9-0, 6 KO’s). The Vietnamese 135-pounder Nguyen Van Hai has long been regarded as a excellent, experienced amateur fighter, although he hasn’t seen any action at all in 30 long months. Still, Hai has kept himself running, working out, sparring, and profusely sweating every day in the gym, with the mind set of “never giving up.”
As an amateur boxer, Nguyen Van Hai won the Vietnam national championships, and claimed medals in Asian Games in various weight-classes. But due to limited opportunities to battle as a pro, Nguyen Van Hai hasn’t fought much, currently being unbeaten in just 2 fights one of them he won by KO. That’s why, Nguyen Van Hai signed with VSP Boxing Promotions last year, in an attempt to kick off his pro boxing career, searching for a brighter future for his family.

Geez..., it seems like a lifetime ago especially with the COVID pandemic raging across the globe. This photo is going to make it to the history book one day when people look back and ask "Hey, when did professional boxing start in Vietnam?" My business partner is a punter who successfully runs a billion dollar betting business in Australia and he immediately recognized the talents of some Vietnamese boxers from a small boxing event I had arranged 4 months earlier. He had this crazy idea of bringing in talented boxers from Australia to Vietnam to put this opinion to the test. Vietnamese boxers were all amateurs and had not fought professional boxing. He was of the opinion that Vietnamese boxers would put up a good fight while the Australian coach laughed and predicted 100% win by the Australian team with 60% KO rate. 8 boxers were flown in from Australia and the event was on. The event was done as an exhibition fight that allowed amateur boxers to be matched against professional boxers. As the event went on, one Aussie boxer after another exited the ring in disbelief that an amateur would beat him. Final score was 5 wins to the Vietnamese team out of 8 fights that evening. Can't believe me? Check out the full fight videos on our YouTube channel.
Now it begs the question, how did Vietnamese boxers perform so well against good pros? Vietnam is not really known for professional boxing. There are several factors that I think resulted in such outcome. The organizer deliberately kept the rounds at 4 rounds for each bout. This is actually a huge advantage to the amateur boxers who are used to the 3 rounds format under amateur rules. (If you are not familiar with the difference between "Amateur Boxing vs Professional Boxing, check out our blog on this and you will definitely have a better understanding on which boxer is winning and why.) Anyway, back to the topic! Another factor is that the Australian boxers definitely underestimated their opponents and did not really prepare as hard as they otherwise would have. In addition, the weather (the heat and the humidity) is not something boxers from Sydney were used to and this became even harder for them in the ring as multiple halogen spot lights raised the temperature to above 33C. Last but least, it's the psychological aspect of the match up. There must have been a pressure on the professional boxer to win the fight and when they felt being outscored by the Vietnamese amateur boxer in the first 2 rounds, a thought would probably go through "damn....it's only 4 rounds and I am already down on 2.....I gotta do something!" This would push the pro boxers to take more risk by being the aggressor but it also means they become more vulnerable to counter punches and making mistakes that could be exploited by the Vietnamese boxers.
One thing that really stood out was how tough the Vietnamese boxers were. I am not talking about the physical toughness which all boxers had that night but the grit, the heart, and not being afraid at all about fighting professional boxers. Boxing is a mental sport as much as it is a physical sport and this traits by the Vietnamese boxers show bright hope for the future of professional boxing in Vietnam. For the next Victory8, we said we would bring even tougher fighters from overseas to go against the Viets!
Jason "Manefisto" Buenaobra brought the heat, and some nice technical tools to go with it, in a superb match up with Bukidnon's Lorenz Ladrada at UKC. Buenaobra pressed dangerously for all six rounds, and presented lots of problems for Ladrada from a constantly pivoting southpaw stance. It was an energetic display by Buenaobra, and one that fell just short on a hard to score bout. This was a great showing by Manefisto, who looks certain ask serious questions of rivals in future fights.
Lorenz Ladrada closes out the year having just engaged in a closely contested battle with the irrepressible Jason Buenaobra. The year proved busy for Bukidnon's Ladrada, who chalked up 4 wins and an SD loss to the promising Gary Tamayo. Flair and footwork were his travelling companions, and in 2022, expect to see more improvements to his repertoire.
Buenaobra was a revelation! He really toiled throughout this match, constantly taking Ladrada out of his comfort zone. He did such a great job, this smart southpaw was able to keep Ladrada on the backfoot for much of their quality bout. The effort of Jason Buenaobra was top class, and excited to see what he can deliver in 2022, especially if he drops to a more suitable weight class.
Another great pic from our friend Alvin Go!
