FORMER interim World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia bantamweight champion Jess Rhey Waminal tests his mettle against knockout artist Jon Jon Estrada in an eight-round fight in the undercard of Tiger 2022 Ultimate Knockout Challenge on March 12 in Parañaque City, Metro Manila.
“This will be a good fight because my opponent is a knockout artist,” Waminal told SunStar Cebu. “I saw videos of him. He’s not to be taken lightly because he has power.”
Though the 32-year-old Estrada has a mediocre looking record, his fights are very unpredictable and could go his way anytime because of his power. He owns knockout wins over former ALA Boy Brian Lobetania, Japanese Tasuku Nakagawa, Rex Wao and Jestine Tesorio.
Estrada is on a three-fight winning streak, knocking out Wao, Pablito Canada and Tesorio.
The 27-year-old Waminal, a former amateur standout, is coming off a 12th round knockout in the hands of his former ALA Gym teammate Pete Apolinar in an Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Silver featherweight title fight on July 3, 2021 in Mandaue City.
Waminal wants to redeem himself and return to the winning column by beating Estrada.
“This is a very important fight for me. I need to win impressively so that I’ll move back up the division ladder,” said Waminal. “My advantage is that I’m tall and I have skills.”
Waminal is 14-4-1 with eight knockouts, while Estrada is 14-8-1 with 13 knockouts.
Jonjon Estrada behind on the cards, and getting a boxing lesson from Mindanao's Jess Rhey Waminal, scores two crushing knockdowns to win the fight.
Jess Rhey Waminal looked all class, and was picking Estrada apart. He just needed to keep boxing to ensure victory.
Estrada now 15 wins 14 knockouts.
THE WOLVERINE !!! WOW !!
Can the face of violent imposition look so impossibly handsome?
Jonjon Estrada plans to answer that question with an exclamation mark, when he takes on the hugely talented Jess Rhey Waminal, at TIGER 2O22 on Saturday March 12th.
Both fighters sit on 14 wins, both fighters are similarly ranked, but their modus operandi couldn't be any more different, and this makes it compelling viewing.
Mindanao boxer Waminal was a quality amateur, and he shows those beautiful technical touches as a pro.
The Wolverine has gained cult status because of his very neanderthal approach, he stalks his prey with a low and crouching style, and carries knockout power in both hands. He has morphed into one of the most feared boxers in the Philippines, courtesy of his 13 "put your lights out" stoppage victories.
BUT DON'T BE DECEIVED BY THE SMILE !
DOES "VIOLENCE" HAVE A FACE ?
