Ifugao boxing prospect Carl Jammes “Wonder Boy” Martin gets his shot at the vacant WBA Asia super bantamweight title when he takes on Ronnie Baldonado at the Ultimate Knockout Challenge at the Elorde Sports Complex in Parañaque City on March 12. Carl Jammes Martin closed last year with a gritty win over champion Mark Anthony Geraldo. It was a contest for the Philippines title, and regarded as the first significant step up for the Wonder Boy.
He passed the test with flying colors!! Geraldo applied non stop pressure throughout their epic match, and it was a mature performace by Martin to keep a cool head. Ultimately, it was the accuracy and crispness of the counter punch that swayed the judges in favor of Wonder Boy, and it proved to be a top quality title bout.
The Wonder Boy gets his first glimpse at a regional title here against 15 fight winner Baldonado, and getting the win will be no easy task!
"That's Amore" !! Two WBA Asia title holders in the house at ANNIHILATION TIGER UKC in Parañaque, the most recently crowned being Linn Sandstrom.
The Swedish fighter, trained in Australia by Tony Del Vecchio, scored a solid win to grab the belt from a Thai opponent that came to survive. It was Sandstrom's 6th win as a pro, and signaled better things to come.
And who better to compare notes with than the Wonder Boy himself, Carl Jammes Martin, who recently successfully defended the very same title!

The fight between Baldonado and Martin was a classic, with Martin overcoming an early setback, only to work back into the contest and regain ascendency later in the bout.
Big kudos to Ronnie Baldonado, he was outstanding, and he made this another memorable bout for Wonder Boy and the fans.

Baldonado knocked down Wonder Boy in the second, and dominated till the mid stages, where a resurgent Martin edged back. In the end it was Martin's fitness that prevailed, against a totally exhausted Baldonado.

The “Little Giant” makes his long awaited return at TIGER 2022, matching up with the experienced veteran Albert Alcoy. The bout marks a ring absence of more than 2.5 years for the locally based star, when he defeated the outstanding Renoel Pael in a thriller.
The win over Pael, a winner of 23 fights, highlighted the level that Escaner had worked to in his professional career. It also put him back on the winners’ list, after a previous loss to top American Joshua Greer ended in a dramatic stoppage loss. That blip punctuated a 10 match winning streak for the “Little Giant”.
The fight between top US prospect Joshua Greer and Giovanni Escaner must surely have been one of the most THRILLING in 2019. Greer appeared to be sailing towards a world title. With only one loss on his resume, to the unbeaten Stephen Fulton, Greer was expected to make a statement in the Escaner fight. But things didn’t go to plan for the high flying American. Escaner dropped Greer in the third round, and it really looked as if he was going to be finished off by the Little Giant. To his credit, Greer regained his senses, and in a to and fro round, managed to stop Escaner in round 8. The action was frenetic, and it seemed obvious that the Philippines fighter perhaps only got caught in his effort to drop the American for a second time. To illustrate the closeness of the bout, the judges had scores of 67-66 and 67-65 when the referee called a halt.
Giovanni Escaner has been sparring in Manila in preparation for March 12th, and if the rumours are correct, he will show no signs of ring rust upon his return. He has been working with quality opponents, including Carl Jammes Martin, who can confidently testify to the fact “The Little Giant is back!!!”
When it comes to skills and experience, look no further than outstanding super bantam Giovanni Escaner, who resumes at TIGER 2O22 next month. A winner of 20 bouts, national titles, and interim regional belts, Escaner has all the tools to be both boss and teacher!

Ronnie “Jong Jong” Baldonado will take on Carl Jammes Martin for the WBA Asia title in Manila on Saturday March 12. The Mindanao fighter boasts a superb record of 15 wins and 2 losses, and returns to the ring for the first time since late 2019. The solidly built Baldonado has a wealth of experience against varied styles of opponents, including international fights in China and Japan. Winning on the road in China is never easy, but Jong Jong made sure his efforts were not in vain, by knocking out his two opponents in Beijing!
Ronnie Baldonado jumps in weight class to take the Wonder Boy challenge, but the strong orthodox fighter looks a nice foil to Martin’s southpaw magic. He lacks nothing in the power department either, having put 9 of his previous victim’s to the sword. This annual report serves as a benchmark for our progress and a commitment to transparency in our operations. In 2024, a notable decline occurred in the number of professional boxing events held domestically. This downturn was primarily attributed to the cessation of grassroots events by VSP Promotions, a key promoter that played a crucial role in introducing new talent to the domestic professional boxing scene.
The challenges faced in organizing professional boxing events in Vietnam intensified in 2024 compared to the previous year, a reflection of the current market conditions. We anticipate this trend to persist in 2025 due to the continued existence of an unsupportive environment for event organizers, fostered by the local amateur boxing federation.
VBO organized the gathering of 10 commissions in Asia in 8/2024. It is our view that Asia has a fundamental challenge in how boxing is managed and supervised. Standardization and coherent cooperation models that have actionable and measurable outcomes will need to be developed in order to create more regional opportunities for the industry participants.
