The Philippines man known as “The Silencer” is without doubt one of the better technical stylists from that country. He has scored 15 wins against some top opposition, and he managed to put 11 of those victims to sleep. So you don’t need to ask why the ring name !
Arnel Baconaje is high caliber in the 126-130lb weight class, and it would be accurate to say, he would start a solid favourite to win this match at those weights.
But he moves to 135lb here – and he also moves to Dinh Hong Quan’s domain !
So he gives away size, height and reach here – and that is where this bout becomes a real 50/50 proposition.
The claims are that Dinh Hong Quan will be a vastly improved fighter for this, and he will need to be, as Baconaje represents a significant step up on the less experienced Jules Victoriano, and that was an extremely close contest.
Unbeaten Japanese star Mikito Nakano and Philippines national champ were both within the 130lb limit at today's weigh in.
The two fighters will box 8 rounds tomorrow night in Korakuen Hall Tokyo.
Nakano has a formidable reputation, being unbeaten in 7 fights, resolving 6 of those with thudding stoppages.
Arnel Baconaje "The Silencer" represents the Japanese power puncher's most significant test so far, and he will be stepping into the ring confident of handling anything that Nakano has to offer.
This is the man that stands in the way of emerging Japanese star Mikito Nakano maintaining a perfect kill rate of pinoys on his unblemished fight record.
Arnel Baconaje "The Silencer" meets Nakano next Tuesday night at the iconic Korakuen Hall, and flew out from Manila today with coach Toto Laurente.
Mikito Nakano boasts a record of 7-0 with 6 knockouts, and most tellingly, he has been as brutal as he has been flawless with his pinoy body count.
Arvin Yurong, KJ Natuplag, Juanito Paredes and Lorenz Ladrada - all quality boxers in their own right, but were slain and dispatched in body bags at the hands of the ruthless Japanese technician.
But Arnel Baconaje is cut from different cloth, and having sparred numerous top opponents such as Naoya Inoue in Japan previously, he is better equipped than his predecessors for the impending battle.
The Silencer's most recent outing was a RP title win over Jhon Gemino in May, so he will be heading to Japan confident that Nakano's dominance over pinoy fighters will be tested to the limit next Saturday.
Iloilo native Arnel Baconaje put on an exemplary boxing display to secure the Philippines super featherweight belt just moments ago.
Baconaje dominated early, but was part on alert by a dangerous and resurgent Jhon Gemino in rounds 4-6. Gemino showed good head movement and landed some quality shots, but Baconaje remained composed.
Arnel Baconaje controlled the action well in the second half, relentlessly jabbing, shoulder rolling defense, and answering Gemino with straight rights and uppercut.
The fitness and resilience of both boxers was excellent, but in the end, it was the well executed game plan of perfect distance and timed counters that proved the deciding factor for the judges.

Surely a match made in heaven - Arnel Baconaje "The Silencer" has his eyes set on the RP National belt, but who better than "The Disaster" Jhon Gemino to thwart those ambitions ?
Baconaje v Gemino has been added to what is already a huge undercard to the Casimero bout at the Okada Casino on May 13th, and realistically, could really catch fire and become the fight of the night !
Arnel Baconaje has proved to be one of the Philippines classiest boxers in recent years, and is desperate to show that he is is the best super featherweight on the local scene.
The Disaster shapes as a bit of an unknown quantity, as despite three losses at his most recent, they were narrow points decisions against quality international opposition.
Jhon Gemino is world class when he is at best, having previously knocked out unbeaten Americans Toka Clary and Arnold Alejandro. The Parañaque based fighter also gave world champion Emanuel Navarrete a hell fight before being ultimately stopped in a great clash.
And be at his best he will need to be, as Arnel Baconaje is intent on wearing the Philippines national belt next Saturday !
ALL ROADS LEAD TO PANGASINAN MARCH 30TH
Arnel "the Silencer" Baconaje goes to war with Presco "the Iceman" Carcosia in General Santos City for the RP National Super Featherweight title.
Lagao Gym, General Santos City
Sunday February 26th
Friday training at Elorde Southbox , and there were three really good ones in the ring today !
King's Warrior Charly Suarez, MMA prospect Ian Batoto, and the Silencer Arnel Baconaje engaged in light sparring for upcoming bouts.
Baconaje heads to GenSan this week for a crack at the Philippines national belt on Sunday February 26th.
Charly Suarez has a big assignment if his own. He heads to Sydney very soon, where he will challenge Aussie #1 Paul Fleming for four major belts. A win places Suarez in the world top 10 with three of those, and perhaps makes him mandatory for both IBF and IBO world titles.
Exciting fights coming up !
Arnel Baconaje takes the show on the road, when he heads to General Santos City for a national title bid on Sunday February 26th.
"The Silencer" faces top local prospect Presco Carcosia (10-2) for the Philippines national super featherweight title. Success guarantees the winner a top 10 ranking with the OPBF.
Arnel Baconaje has been in great form, having competed recently in Vietnam in December 2022.
Despite competing above his weight class, the pinoy turned in a fantastic performance in his bid for the IBF Asia Lightweight title.
In a match that could have gone either way, Baconaje lost narrowly on points on two cards, and was given a draw on another. It was an epic contest, and a valiant effort by Vietnam's Dinh Hong Quân, but there were many in attendance that thought the win should have gone to The Silencer.
You can watch the match here and judge for yourselves. It is the brand of Arnel Baconaje action that will be heading to GenSan next week and winning a national title !
Arnel Baconaje was recently in Vietnam at VSP Gym prepping for a December match with Vietnam champ Dinh Hong Quân.
That was a bout in Ho Tram for the IBF Asia Lightweight title, and despite the match being above his usual weight class, Baconaje and Quân fought an extremely close battle.
The Philippines man revered as "The Silencer" returns to the ring in General Santos City (the former home of Manny Pacquiao) on Sunday February 26th. And this time, it is another big fight.
Baconaje takes on the "the Iceman" Presco Carcosia (10-2 9KO) for the Philippines national championship at Super Featherweight.
The weight class will be more favorable this time, but he faces a seriously skilled and fast opponent in Carcosia, so it should be a great main event.
VSP are big admirers of Arnel Baconaje, who always prepares well and turns in excitement filled performances, so we wish him luck in pursuit of the Philippines title next Sunday.
Was it ever in doubt ?
YAP IS BACK !
Mark John Yap makes his eagerly awaited ring return at UKC REVOLUTION 2023 against former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner Leonardo Doronio.
Yap has the reputation as one of the Philippines' best internationally performed boxers of recent years, thus earning him The Journey Man tag, and he will be looking to embark his 2023 trip with a great performance at home.
The former bantamweight star has only recently made the super featherweight division his new home, yet will challenge Doronio at Lightweight, such is the difficulty in getting the Mindanao product decent competition in a season opener.
Mark John Yap produced a classy performance against Charly Suarez for the WBA Asia title, and endorsed that effort with an impressive win over Papua New Guinea's best Junior Kauko Raka.
Yap then ventured to Vietnam to compete at Fortunes of War, and looked good in a fast paced short format exhibition event.
Leonardo Doronio is a very experienced boxer, who will hold the advantage of being the slightly larger man. He posted good wins over Bryan Macamay and Jimmy Borbon, before a points loss to outstanding pinoy Arnel Baconaje. He will prove to be a great measure of where Mark John Yap is early in his 2023 adventure.
But the word is out - Yap is back !
January 30th marks the start of a new journey.

Another torrid test for Vietnam Lightweight champion Quân, who had to dig deep after having issues making weight.
Arnel "the Silencer" Baconaje provided constant pressure with his accuracy and power shots, which were definitely not accurately reflected on the scorecards.
Main event boys Dinh Hong Quân and Arnel Baconaje ready to tear up the Ho Tram Strip.
Philippines Baconaje has vowed to return home with the IBF Asia title.
We are sure Vietnam's champ has other ideas !
Arnel Baconaje 61.2kg (Philippines)
Vietnam's Dinh Hong Quân weighed in heavy at 62.6kg, so is unable to defend the IBF Asia belt.
The match will still prove to be a significant task for Baconaje, who must defeat Quân if he wants to be crowned champion.

In his 12th pro match, IBF Asia lightweight champion Đinh Hồng Quân will face Arnel Baconaje of the Philippines over 12 rounds. It is his second time defending his belt. Last July, he defeated Jules Victoriano of the Philippines unanimously.
HÀ NỘI — A blockbuster "Fortunes of War" boxing event will bring together Asia's best fighters in 12 bouts, including three title matches, sanctioned by the IBF and WBO on December 10 at The Grand Hồ Tràm Strip, Bà Rịa Vũng Tàu Province.
In his 12th pro match, IBF Asia lightweight champion Đinh Hồng Quân will face Arnel Baconaje of the Philippines over 12 rounds. It is his second time defending his belt. Last July, he defeated Jules Victoriano of the Philippines unanimously.
The rising Vietnamese star does have a size advantage. Quân has recorded nine wins (4KOs), one draw and one loss (KO).
At 24, 'Black Eagle' Quân is younger than his rival and stands at No 189 in the world, 43 places higher than Baconaje.
However, 'The Silencer' Baconaje has bowled over some of the Philippines' biggest and best stars. Of his 15 wins, 11 came by knockout. The 29-year-old has suffered five losses, three by knockout.
Baconaje has thoroughly prepared by training with the famous fighter "Japanese monster" Naoya Inoue.
Quân completed a training camp in South Korea before having an intensive training camp with legendary Manny Pacquiao in the Philippines.
"I feel in way better shape, my camp has been good, and being able to train with a legend like Manny Pacquiao has helped me a lot," said Quân.
"He is a model of hard work to succeed in boxing, as well as an example of rising up in boxing. Professionally, I learn, practise and improve my abilities to prepare well for the upcoming matches. I won't let people down."
Quân said that Pacquiao advised him a lot. In particular, the most memorable is the practice motto "fight hard, complete the exercises and always have faith".
"Everybody will see a far better Đinh Hồng Quân this time, and I already know I will beat Arnel Baconaje. I am excited about it. I am very happy to have the challenge of stopping a top fighter like Baconaje in front of my home country," he said.
The second title match is between IBF Asia super-featherweight Charly Suarez of the Philippines and Indonesian Defry Palulu in a 12-round bout.
Their match was scheduled in March 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic.
Suarez is a three-time SEA Games champion who won the 2014 Asian Games silver. He turned pro in 2019 and impressed the community with 13 wins with seven KOs.
Suarez has stayed busy this year as he fought for the WBA Asia title in March and defended it twice in July and October. He also won the Philippines national title in the process.
Palulu is currently No 1 in his country. He places 162 in the world with a record of 25 wins, two draws and two losses. He took the IBO Asia Pacific and WBC Asian Boxing Council super-featherweight belts in 2019.
"The Unseen Hammer" is in career-best shape and has been working on angles and power shots to halt the meteoric rise of Suarez.
"That is our plan. Team Palulu have worked very hard for this, and we will not let this opportunity slip," he said on vsppromotions.com.
"Suarez does not have the power to hurt me, or even hold me off. But I know when I catch him, he will go down. Indonesia will have a new champion on December 10."
The third title match is between South Korean Song Chan Ho and Thai Anusong Thonglueang, who will defend his WBO Oriental Youth super-lightweight belt across 10 rounds.
Song, 19, unbeaten in eight fights, is certainly living up to his "Purge Boy" ring name.
He is fast and has a high work rate, nice footwork, and works some clever angles. He is durable and is developing some power to go with his accurate hands.
Tàu City.
Thonglueang, 18, has already created media attention in Thailand, where he has put together 12 wins (9KOs) with only one loss in extra quick time. He is a dynamic all-action fighter and knows how to be effective inside the ropes.
Other matches with Vietnamese fighters are between Nguyễn Văn Hải vs Paisal Panjaitan of Indonesia in the lightweight class in four rounds; Phạm Minh Quân vs Mark John Yap of the Philippines in the super-featherweight in four rounds; Lê Hoàng Hiệp vs Jetro Pabustan of the Philippines in the super-bantamweight in four rounds and Thái Hoàng Huy vs JonJon Estrada of the Philippines in the featherweight in four rounds.
Fortunes of War is organised by Việt Nam's top boxing units of VSP Promotions and Cocky Buffalo with support from Vietcontent, the leading sports content in Việt Nam. VNS
NEWS FROM WEBTHETHAO
Professional boxing events in Vietnam began to rekindle in the period of 2015, when management units such as Vietnam Boxing Federation (VBF) or Ho Chi Minh City Boxing Federation. Ho Chi Minh City (HBF) organizes this form of competition, with the participation of famous boxers in the domestic amateur boxing village. After that, promotion companies began to appear with names like VSP Promotions, Cocky Buffalo, Saigon Sports Club, VBC, Trigger Boxing... continued to appear to bring more national elements. economic: events, title matches, friendlies.
However, it was not until 2018, when the promoters really embarked on a comprehensive approach, at this time, the challenge for the development of professional boxing began to really appear.
To be recognized at the professional level, competitions must be under the supervision of organizations capable of recognizing professional achievements around the world. This supervision is based on the rules - the rules of the game (regulations) are specified in the operating regulations of professional organizations such as WBC, WBO, WBA, IBF...
In Vietnam, the presence of these organizations is not much. Therefore, boxers have only one option: to conduct tours in countries with developed boxing backgrounds such as Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Korea, ... to be recognized for their achievements. However, the issue of funding, training procedures - competing with Vietnamese boxers is not a simple problem, despite the participation of experienced promotion companies in the region.
As a result, promoters have opted for a more pragmatic approach: organizing events right in Vietnam. To do this, they need to contact to get the approval of professional organizations in the world, through sending professional teams, supervising the organization and competition of martial arts.
Since 2019, units like VSP Promotions have made their mark with a series of events such as Victory 8, VSP Pro,... bringing Vietnamese boxers to participate in professional matches at home, recognizing their achievements. in the international system, gradually removing barriers for boxers who want to pursue this path.
From professional events, title fights began to appear. Victory 8: Legend of Hoan Kiem with the title of WBA East Asia; events of IBF, WBO at The Grand Ho Tram Strip with champions Dinh Hong Quan, Song Chan Ho... and here comes Fortunes of War with 3 matches for WBO - IBF title in weight classes on 10th December.
Not only for boxers, bringing international events to Vietnam also creates opportunities for domestic professionals, namely management units, referees, supervisors, etc. exposure to professional environment according to world standards. From there, events in Vietnam will gradually move to international level - something we all want in the development of all sports.
Following the success of two title events in April and July, Fortunes of War witnessed the title defense of the IBF Asian champion - "Black Hawk" Dinh Hong Quan in his 11th fight. The fighter born in 1998 will face the boxer from the Philippines - "Silent Assassin" Arnel Baconaje.
In addition to the defense of the IBF Asian lightweight title between Dinh Hong Quan and Arnel Baconjae, Charly Suarez - a three-time SEA Games gold medalist and silver medalist at ASIAD 2014 will welcome an opponent from Indonesia - Defry Palulu for the IBF title. Asian super-featherweight.
Previously, WBO Oriental champion from Korea - Song Chan Ho will face Thai boxer Anusong Thonglueang in his title defense match. The competition took place over 10 rounds in the super-lightweight division.
In addition to the three matches/defending of the IBF and WBO belts, Fortunes Of War also witnessed the return of Vietnamese boxing monument Nguyen Van Hai, promising fighters Le Hoang Hiep, Thai Hoang Huy or Pham Minh Quan before the competition. boxers from Indonesia and the Philippines.

Charly Suarez will be heading to Vietnam this Friday for his first international test since turning professional. The King's Warrior will be going up against Indonesia’s best fighter Defry Palulu - a boxer with a 25-2 record and a former WBC regional belt holder.
Palulu has been in great form since boxing resumed, winning four bouts since a pandemic enforced break. His team is confident that this awkward southpaw has recaptured his best and will be the first fighter to drop the Philippines champion Suarez.
Did we say SOUTHPAW ? Ugggh !
Never ones to falter on the side of preparation, Team Suarez have been working in sparring with many of the Philippines best southpaws.
And on that subject, they don't come much better than RoyRoy D'HAMMER Sumugat, who did some excellent preparation work with Charly Suarez last week.

A lot of people say it was a very close fight with Philippines last time, and it was, but most did not know that I had no sparring before that match. Everybody will see a far better Dinh Hong Quân this time, and I already know that I will hurt Arnel Baconaje.
It's a very good match, I am excited for it. I am very happy to have the challenge of stopping a top fighter like Baconaje in front of my home country. "

THE GRAND HO TRAM JUST GOT HOTTER !!!
Saturday December 10 Fortunes of War !
Dinh Hong Quan is gaining the reputation as one of Vietnam's most improved and fearless fighters.
On December 10, the man revered as the Black Hawk, will defend his IBF title on home soil against one of Asia's best at 126-130lb - Philippines' very own Arnel Baconaje.
This will the third defense for the Vietnam champion, and admirably, he has taken on quality opposition each time. The Black Hawk originally won the IBF belt on foreign soil against the very experienced Korean Dong Hee Kim, dispatching his opponent with a showreel left hook !
Since then he has defended against emerging pinoy boxers Delmar Pellio and Jules Victoriano, both of whom enjoyed physical batlles with the Vietnam boxer.
Arnel Baconaje represents another rise in class for Quân, and there is no doubt that at 130, the Philippines man known as "The Silencer" would start an overwhelming betting favourite. But this battle will be at 135lb, and will be held in Dinh Hong Quân's backyard.
It's Vietnam v Philippines its Black Hawk v The Silencer and its the IBF Asia title on the line !

THE GRAND HO TRAM STRIP VIETNAM
Saturday December 10
Arnel "the Silencer" Baconaje is Vietnam bound, and he has only one objective on his mind.
To defeat the man known as the "Black Hawk", Vietnam's Lightweight champion Dinh Hong Quan, and return to his native Philippines wearing his IBF belt.
Cocky Buffalo prospect Quan has successfully defended the IBF belt twice already, and whilst they have been hard fought bouts against quality pinoys, it is also fair to say that the young Vietnam boxer is still making technical improvements with each challenge.
He is also getting bigger and stronger.
But the Silencer has no interest in any of that !
As its equally fair to say that he is far more experienced boxer than the two previous opponents of Dinh Hong Quan, and is more definitely more skilful at landing meaningful punches. The Philippines boxer from Iloilo has landed 11 knockouts in his 15 wins.
This is a classic main event, where based on experience, the Philippines Arnel Banconaje is the man to beat and would start a solid favorite.
But you can't rule out the Black Hawk, as he just keeps improving and rising to each new challenge.
If you're a Vietnam fan and haven't seen Baconaje before, check out some of his bag work from late last week. Crisp and precise.
He will be looking to clip the wings of the Black Hawk on December 10.

Vietnam's Lightweight champion Dinh Hong Quan will face Philippines Arnel Baconaje at the Grand Ho Tram Strip for the IBF title on December 10. This will be as significant a main event as the country has ever seen, where incumbent champion Dinh Hong Quan (9-1) faces his sternest test to date against the skilful pinoy boxer.
The Vietnam rising star has the size advantage, yet Baconaje has bowled over some of the Philippines' biggest and best scoring, 11 knockouts in his 15 wins to date. This is a massive main event with both fighters having the genuine attributes to claim the IBF prize.
Dinh Hong Quan will join the Manny Pacquiao training camp in preparation for his December assignment, whilst Baconaje is currently in Japan working with pound for pound star Naoya Inoue. The match between Dinh Hong Quan and Arnel Baconaje will take place at The Grand Ho Tram Strip in Vietnam on Saturday December 10th.
Fight card and ticket information coming soon!
Congratulations to the Philippines fighters that will be competing at the Grand Ho Tram in Vietnam on Saturday December 10. Arnel Baconaje and Charly will contest IBF titles in two of the main event matches.
Baconaje will take on incumbent lightweight champion Dinh Hong Quan, a Vietnam fighter that has recent history with pinoys Delmar Pellio and Jules Victoriano. Charly Suarez is expected to have a confirmed opponent soon.
*story courtesy of Yahoo! News
Arnel Baconaje will gun for his second straight win as he takes on Aussie prospect Jackson Jon England on Sept. 2, 2022 in Australia.
Baconaje beat journeyman Leonardo Doronio last March 12 in Parañaque City. He will be gunning for his first win overseas after losing to Yasutaka Ishimoto in Japan, Lingjie Xia in China and Ivan Kozlovsky in Russia.
The 24-year-old England is looking to bounce back after suffering a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of unbeaten Paul Fleming on March 23, 2022 in Sydney. The 28-year-old Baconaje is 15-5 with 11 knockouts, while England is 13-2 with eight knockouts.
Meanwhile, featherweight prospect Lorenz Ladrada locks horns with Aussie hard-hitter Dana Coolwell on July 2 in an eight-round contest at the Gold Coast Convention Centre in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia.
Ladrada is looking for his second straight win after beating Jason Buenaobra by unanimous decision in his last fight on Dec. 4 in Parañaque City.
This will be Labrada’s biggest fight to date and his first international fight.
Coolwell, a former Australian champion, wants to return to his winning ways after losing to Ender Luces in an International Boxing Federation Youth super featherweight fight last April 13 in Queensland. The 23-year-old Coolwell’s other loss is also via a split decision Jake Wyllie last year. The 25-year-old Ladrada is 11-2-1 with three knockouts, while Coolwell is 7-2 with five knockouts.
Big news breaking is that outstanding Philippines boxer Arnel Baconaje has secured a big fight in Australia on September 2nd.
The man known as "the Silencer" will take on gifted local Jackson Jon England who boasts a 13 and 2 record. England was responsible for perhaps the best fight seen in Australia this year, when narrowly outpointed by Paul Fleming for four major titles, including WBC, WBA and IBF belts.
The match in Perth on September 2nd gives Jackson Jon England a chance to avenge that controversial loss, but his task against Baconaje, who is among Philippines elite, will be daunting.
Arnel Baconaje and JonJon Estrada will head to Japan to punch holes in former WBO world title holder Tomoki Kameda.
The Japanese fighter has been relatively quiet during the pandemic, but resumes on July 30 to take on quality Dominican William Encarcion.
Kameda boasts an impressive 38 and 3 record, and interestingly, his only loss in recent years was to the unbeaten Rey Vargas, the very same Mexican that is soon to face Mark Magsayo!
Opportunities to work with foreign fighters are always great ways to build skills, but one also has to spare a thought for the rugged Kameda. It surely will be no picnic trading leather with the Wolverine and the Silencer.
Double Trouble!
Great performance by Arnel Baconaje to win by shutout over an extremely resilient Leonardo Doronio.
Baconaje landed more frequently, and also had the power ascendancy, over a bigger opponent. He also controlled the ring with excellent movement.
It was definitely an improved version of Doronio today, he looked fit and imposing. He just struggled with Baconaje's movement, and he will no doubt fare better with a less mobile opponent.
Three of the very best fighters in the Philippines right now, hungry but still smiling!
Richard "the Beast "Pumicpic, Arnel "the Silencer" Baconaje, and the wild dog himself - JonJon "the Wolverine " Estrada are seated in wait for their turn on the scales.
BIG FIGHTS COMING TOMORROW !
YES Linn Sandstrom and Arnel Baconaje LOOK LIKE MODELS, but they are actually FIGHTERS !
They will be competing tomorrow in Paranaque at TIGER 2O22 Ultimate Knockout Challenge.
Weigh in and press conference today.
Ben "the Juicer" Mcculloch was one of the best boxers Australia has ever produced, winning 14 straight and getting to world rank #3 as a super middleweight. His signature was his beautiful balance, distance and rotational power, often producing decapitation style knockouts. And it always looked so effortless!
Arnel Baconaje is as close as we've seen to the Aussie star, and he is a standout as one of the Philippines best and most technical operators. The Iloilo fighter shows really good patience in setting his shots, makes good angles, and dispenses the pain with plenty of high and low variety. His defensive base is solid, and he simply never gives cheap shots away to opponents.
Says McCulloch : "I love this guy, especially when I've seen him work with Suarez and Pumicpic. He has the really nice distance and jab, and has that nice Bernard Hopkins /James Toney roll that I used to love when I fought. But you know what, I can see a lot of Canelo in JUICER2, he really is QUALITY !"
Juicer2, also known as "the Silencer ",will be appearing next week at TIGER 2O22 in Manila. Tune in, and judge for yourself ! He is a special fighter.

Outstanding young prospects Tomjune Mangubat and Carlo Bacaro are promising to storm the fortress of Manila and take home all the spoils of victory. They say by the time they are done - there will be nothing left, especially for SEA Games hero Charly "King's Warrior " Suarez !
The Cebu based pair are trained at Omega Gym, and are under the expert tutelage of head coach Julius Erving Junco. Word on the street is that they have been training the house down, and are confident to make headlines at TIGER 2O22 next month in Paranaque.
Tomjune Mangubat has not only an imposing physique, he boasts a resume to match!.
He takes on the Philippines' best boxer Charly Suarez for the WBA Asia title, and the mood in camp is that the former Olympian's reputation will count for nothing once the opening bell sounds. The Omega team are on track for a devastating victory, feeling Suarez lacks the power and legs to go to war for 12 rounds. They also are strongly committed to chasing the knockout if the former amateur champ shows any sign of weakness. And with three imposing stoppages in his most recent bouts, the confidence of Team Mangubat looks well founded.
Carlo Bacaro is definitely one of the hottest prospects in the country, and all eyes will be on this unbeaten young star when he takes on the ultra experienced Jimmy Borbon.

Perhaps the most intriguing of the early bouts at TIGER 2022, is the matchup between Jonathon Almacen and the long absent John Paul Bentoso. The bout takes place at junior flyweight, and whilst it poses many unknowns, none is more baffling than "where the hell has John Paul Bentoso been since 2017?? "
Well, it appears that he has now been found, and Jonathon Almacen will be probing for answers!
Jonathon Almacen is an excellent young prospect, born and bred in Manila. This 22 year old orthodox debuted in 2016, where he had an unfortunate technical draw with an excellent emerging boxer named Enrique Magsalin. The trend for quality opponents was repeated, and the improving Alamcen won his next four fights before narrow losses to unbeaten pinoys Jayson Vayson and ArAr Andales. In spite of the losses, Almacen was showing lots of upside, and he quickly regrouped to win the WBC silver title in China over the highly rated Xiang Le. This popular boxer was doing it in style, and earned the moniker “Pretty Boy” (or maybe it was his looks????) His most recent win in 2019 was perhaps his best so far, when he literally shutout Roldan Sasan, a boxer that had only been previously beaten once in 10 fights.
“Pretty Boy” Almacen resumes as a very young fighter on the up and up. This boxer has already amassed 7 wins, he has fast hands, good skills, and shows plenty of variety in his opening attacks. He has been sparring quality partners in preparation for TIGER 2022, so it’s accurate to say that he is a “known” quantity.
But what of his opponent John Paul Bentoso, and how do we make any prediction on this bout????
John Paul Bentoso has been on the missing persons list since 2017!
“The Ghost” Bentoso showed huge potential from the time he was a kid. A regular fixture at national youth championships, Bentoso routinely figured in the medals. In 2014, he won the national championship, defeating the outstanding boxer Robert Paradero, who has subsequently racked up 18 wins as a professional. In 2016, Bentoso was ousted in the semi finals by the barest of margins, falling to a split decision at the hands of another future star named Carlo Paalam.
So “the Ghost” turns pro in 2017, and he looks born to the game! The fast handed southpaw fighter wins 3 bouts in quick succession, all of them by lethal stoppage. His most recent outing was in September of 2017, where he was responsible for a violent beat down of Bonjun Loperez, a far more experienced pro boasting 10 wins. The experience counted for zilch, and it was all over in round two.
And that was it, John Paul Bentos disappeared off the face of the planet, thus becoming “the Ghost”, but in no way diminishing his reputation or aura.
The great news is that Bentoso is back, yet none of us are any the wiser as to what version we will see on March 12th against Jonathon Almacen, who no doubt, will get to the bottom of that mystery!

Mindanao fighter Aisah Alico returns to the ring for the first time since early 2019. This southpaw from CDO is an experienced and internationally travelled war monger, and has some of the best fighters in the minimumweight division on her resume. She makes her return here as a flyweight, and despite being able to easily attain the lighter weight class, she comes to TIGER 2022 at the identical height of opponent Linn Sandstrom.
“D’Striker “ is perfectly monikered as she has really good hands, and she does create awkward angles from her southpaw stance. Ring rust may play a big part here for Alico, as her opponent has the advantage of recent competition. But for sure, experience is the trump card for Aisah, having shared the ring with top names like Yuko Kuroki, Momo Koseki, Ayaka Miyao and Philippines’ Jess Pagaduan.
The lack of recent form makes this match up tricky to pick, but it must be said, the CDO based Alico has defeated more experienced girls than Sandstrom in her 7 previous wins. She has also stopped 5 opponents along the way. Hmmmmm!
One thing is for certain though, it is great to have women’s boxing finally back in action once more!
GO GIRLS!!!
The opening men’s bout at TIGER 2022 will almost certain to set the benchmark for fast hands and feet!
A minimumweight clash over 4 rounds between young resuming boxers Malfred Majadas and John Jayvee Antonio, and both boxers have speed to burn!
The “Mad Dog” Malfred Majadas is based in Paranaque, and made his pro debut back in March of 2018, when he defeated Rosenido Autida by majority decision. He was able to maintain a busy schedule, which is great for any aspiring young fighter, winning 3 of his 4 bouts to date. This activity was punctuated by the pandemic, and sadly, we haven’t seen this promising prospect since early 2019.
So what do we know about Majadas? Well, he is relatively tall orthodox fighter. He uses distance quite well, and he has a patient conservative style. He is not a silly risk taker, and he selects his shots. His main attribute has also been constant improvement, and his most recent win against Francisco Morales, was emphatic enough to earn a unanimous decision.
John Jayvee Antonio shapes up as an interesting counter argument to the Mad Dog. This Manila based orthodox has also been absent since early 2019, and has a lesser record at face value of 1 win from 4 outings. But you only need to delve a little deeper to see that Antonio has had the far harder opponents, and his most recent points loss was to Alexander Almacen, a winner of his only 3 bouts.
Antonio is certainly a bit of a dark horse in this bout, but he boxes well, and has some variety in his first attacks which may pose issues for Majadas. He possesses a nice lead left hook, and he also throws his shots with a little more venom than the more amateur styled Mad Dog.
This is a really interesting bout, where both boxers resume from a long break, so there is plenty of guesswork. The “mad Dog” Majadas will be a warm favourite, but styles make fights, and expect Antonio to give him lots to contend with in this opening match.

Popular Elorde fighter Ali Cañega scored an impressive stoppage win at Ilocos Sur on Saturday. In what was his first appearance since a close tussle with Richard Morales in September last year, Cañega started well, and dominated the action from the opening bell. The man known known as "Carnage " dropped opponent Menard Abila four times in the opening round before the referee called time.
The stoppage victory pushes the unbeaten Cañega to 4 wins in the professional ranks, 3 coming by way of Knockout
2021 was a regrettable year of gym closures, lockdowns, and quarantine bubbles. That not only made putting on an event extremely expensive and difficult, it made including women near impossible.
But all good things come to those who wait, and finally next month, TIGER 2022 sees Linn Sandstrom (1 win) of Australia (by way of Sweden), take on Mindanao’s Aisah Alico (7 wins).
Despite the relative inexperience of Sandstrom , she is on a fast track to learn, and has an interesting back story.
The Brazilian-born fighter was raised in Sweden, where she fell in love with table tennis, and went on to represent her country in the sport.
“Everyone back in Sweden knew me as the girl who played table tennis”
“It is (quite a leap to go from table tennis to boxing), but I’ve been an athlete my whole life so that athlete lifestyle is what I love.”
Sandstrom moved to Australia five years ago and got serious with her ambition to become a pro boxer. While there were skills she picked up in table tennis that came in handy — like hand-eye coordination and footwork — the fight game has one major difference.
“A lot of things are similar except you don’t get punched in the face when you do table tennis,” she said.
Sandstrom will fight Aisah Alico, a southpaw from Cagayan de Oro, before venturing to the States and central America to get some quality sparring. Her ambition is to string some wins together in 2022, and perhaps challenge some bigger names as the gloves start to feel as comfortable as the table tennis racket!
“I’ve had people that really, really want to see me fail. I’m a female that, I’m not just there to say I’m going to do things, I’m here to put in the work and that seems to irritate a lot of people.
“I’m doing me, this is my journey. I’m here to stay now, I’m here to prove a point.”

This is peak Lomachenko !
So knowing that, it's scary how much Suarez has improved since this match, and you will get to witness that first hand when he meets Tomjune Mangubat for the WBA title next month.
Charly Suarez is now 9 and 0 in the pro ranks, and is yet to drop a round!
Interesting footnote to this match with Lomachenko:
Suarez was unable to take part in the bout, as he had suffered a shoulder injury, making it almost impossible to raise his arm. He had also been contesting lighter weight classes. He was told he MUST fight, so he obliged, and decided to just do his best. After this bout with Lomachenko, Suarez required blood platelet injections and constant physiotherapy for the damaged joint, keeping him out of the ring for almost two years. He regrouped, and became the Philippines most esteemed amateur, winning countless international tournaments, including 3 SEA Games gold medals.

Jules Victoriano put on an exemplary boxing performance against a spirited Dave Barlas last night.
Victoriano used his height and reach advantage to perfection, and despite some lunging attacks from Barlas, he was able to enforce an impressive stoppage.
The Elorde boxer, originally from Iloilo, moves to 11 career wins, 8 by way of KO.
Amongst a collection of quality fighters at next month's TIGER 2O22 , the resilient and versatile Pablito Canada Jr. stands tall.
A winner of 7 matches, what has defined his career so far are the resume of opponents he has encountered on his path. The conclusion to be drawn is, Pablito Canada is only chosen for the very most dangerous assignments that other agents ( I mean boxers!) feverishly avoid !
Canada's last win was in late 2019, against Jetro Pabustan, a winner of 30 bouts, and a former WBO world title challenger.
Since then, he has taken on the unbeaten Japanese Ryosuke Nishida in Japan.
Then came Philippines' best boxer, the unbeaten Charly Suarez, and at the heavier class of super featherweight!
And to top that off, he then locked horns with perhaps the Philippines most deadly in KO King JonJon Estrada ! THE WOLVERINE !! Ughhh!
Pablito Canada has fought many of the division's best both locally and overseas, and it is no great surprise that his next opponent is no lesser name!

TIGER 2022 plays host to an array of top name fighters, but without doubt, one of the best match ups is Olivetti’s Remon Basas taking on Jason Buenaobra.
These two boxers could not be any more different in style, yet both are on an upward trajectory. Perhaps the only form line that unites them, is a common opponent in the form of the very talented Lorenz Ladrada.
Remon “Bad Bad” Basas showed promising signs in his first bout of 2021, losing a points battle to Ladrada. Whilst beaten on timing and speed, he showed lots of come forward, and even late into the final round, he still loomed dangerously. He followed up that effort with an excellent win over a vastly improved Marklin Itim, a super close affair that was underscored by a massive punch count for both fighters. But it was the accuracy and shot selection of Basas that swayed the judges, and it was definitely a great showing by the Olivetti boxer.
Jason Buenaobra resumed from a long lay off, and took on Ladrada last December. Showing no signs of rust, “Manefisto” showed beautiful ring control from the southpaw stance, and dominated his opponent for much of the fight. The points loss doesn’t tell the whole story though, as he fought a better version of “Cerberus” Ladrada than Basas did, and he also enjoyed lots of great moments. That fight was also at featherweight, and no doubt, the move to super bantam will really assist his cause.
This one plays out as a total war!
Yes, Jason Buenaobra is the more experienced and technical boxer. But Basas is strong, and he also owns a swarming style that gives rivals no peace, and he will be looking to make this a very dogged, physical contest.
Can he solve the Buenaobra southpaw puzzle? Let’s see, but “Bad Bad” Basas definitely has plans to make life extremely uncomfortable for his classy opponent!

Young, tall and stylish ! And then some! That's top prospect Jestine Ace Tesoro, a rangy 22 year old who has shown beautiful amateur touches in his five pro wins to date.
Last December, the game Tesoro dived into the very deep end of the pool, taking on the far more experienced and very lethal JonJon Estrada. In a cracking action bout, Tesoro worked a beautiful jab, and even gifted the Wolverine a new pair of "wobbly boots" for his efforts! So of course, we wanted to see more!
Jestine Ace Tesoro returns this March to take on an abundantly skilled "Pride of Palawan " Lorence Rosas. This will be a chess match for sure, as Rosas shoots from unconventional southpaw angles. At almost 5 feet and 9 inches, Tesoro has a significant reach advantage, but Rosas is superb at solving height puzzles. It is worth noting, Rosas gave top prospect Virgel Vitor headaches in their recent clash, despite the significant height and weight advantage of his opponent.
Equal measures of strategic warfare here!

Exquisite violence !
Rodrigo and Gonzales performing a skilful and brutal dance that MUST be seen again !

Arnel Baconaje is without doubt one of the Philippines' best and most technical boxers.
He is also one of the most difficult to match!
"The Silencer" is a very skillful and solidly built 130, with a big KO ratio, and unfortunately, had three opponents drop out en route to TIGER 2O22.
Enter saviour Leonardo Doronio !
The internationally experienced, and former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner, resumed from a lay off in December, and produced a really solid win against Jimmy Borbon at 140 super lightweight. Doronio looked "heavy" in that match, and despite his strong showing against an improved Borbon, gave the appearance that a drop in weight class would really suit.
So when the call went out for a quality opponent for the much ducked Baconaje, Leonardo Doronio was quick to answer. But how to make a fight happen between fighters two divisions apart?

Michael Dasmarinas has been boxing from the time he was a kid, and since turning professional at the age of 19, has amassed an incredible 30 wins, many at the highest level (20KO). The champ, known as Hot ‘N Spicy, is rightfully regarded as one of the Philippines’ marquee boxing talents, and in 2021 he shared the ring with perhaps the greatest pound for pound fighter on the planet, Naoya “the Monster” Inoue for a world title shot.
The outstanding 29 year old fighter returned to the ring in Manila last December, where he took on the rugged Ernie Saulong. The match was meant to be “stay in shape” bout for Dasmarinas, as he awaited another big international match, however things (as are often the case in boxing!) didn’t go to plan!!
The combatants Dasmarinas and Saulong clashed heads early in the fight, forcing Saulong to retire prior to round four courtesy of an accidental head butt. The match was deemed a NO CONTEST! Ughhh!

Philippines' loss is Vietnam's gain, and the Hanoi fighter returns to the ring March 26 in HCMC. The comeback marks more than two years since Nguyen Van Hai and Charly Suarez locked horns at Hoan Kiem Lake back in October 2019.
Mindanao lays claims to being the most prolific breeding ground of talented boxers anywhere on planet Earth ! And this compelling truth is reinforced with the knowledge that four of the six main event fighters are from the warrior isle! Charly Suarez and Ronnie Baldonado hold key roles in both WBA titles at TIGER 2022, and despite facing stiff opposition, and will be out to show that very definitely, DAVAO DOES IT BETTER! Winning on the road in China is never easy, but Jong Jong made sure his efforts were not in vain, by knocking out his two opponents in Beijing!
Ronnie Baldonado jumps in weight class to take the Wonder Boy challenge, but the strong orthodox fighter looks a nice foil to Martin’s southpaw magic. He lacks nothing in the power department either, having put 9 of his previous victim’s to the sword. Baldonado will come to Manila all guns blazing, and he certainly won’t be fazed by the reputation of Carl Jammes Martin, nor his unbeaten record!

The very talented southpaw Lorence Rosas returned to the ring after an extended break last year, and despite his best laid plans, the comeback proved to be full of unexpected challenges. Palawan is one of the most beautiful islands in the Philippines, renowned for its white beaches, clear waters and amazing biodiversity.
But if you are a boxer, it sucks!
No reputable gyms, and no events for aspiring fighters, even quality sparring is near impossible to find. And as if the location isn't difficult enough for a boxer like Rosas, Palawan had some surprises in store last December. Typhoon Odette ravaged Puerto Princessa, and unfortunately, the house of the Rosas family was destroyed. Whilst many others spent Christmas around the tree, Lorence languished in a tent! Not one to be deterred, the very resilient Lorence Rosas attacks the new year with renewed zest, returning for TIGER 2022 on March 12th. Ligas has a huge task confronting him this March when he defends his title against the precociously talented Jerven Mama. The Mindanao fighter known as "Iron Fist", is one of the rising stars of the Sanman stable, and he has his sights on returning home as the newly crowned national champ.
That's one side of the story!
Meanwhile in Manila, Ben "the Sniper" Ligas keeps toiling, keeps refining his tools to keep that belt from going south. And who better to work with than the OPBF champ Giemel Magramo, a winner of 25 fights including 20 by way of stoppage.
In the very best traditions of "tough love", let's not forget the old adage that "iron sharpens iron!"
We will see !

Jerven Mama and Ben Ligas are surely throwbacks to a bygone era, when real fighters were steered by the "duck nobody" policy! Their upcoming match will be for the Philippines flyweight title, where Ligas is the defending champion, and Mama is on a mission to take that mantle back to General Santos City. Both these outstanding young prospects have near identical records, and possess a common ideology :

The Philippines' most esteemed amateur Charly Suarez was well known for winning multiple Asian and SEA games gold medals, even representing his country at the RIo 2016 Olympics.
But since turning pro in 2019, the "King's Warrior" has looked nothing short of unstoppable, winning nine fights in quick succession, with six of the vanquished finishing on the canvas.
At an exhibition event in Hanoi Vietnam in late 2019, commentators labelled Suarez as in "the top five on the planet" in his chosen weight division. That high praise seems warranted. Read on!
Despite Suarez's loss in Rio, the performance shone a light on his potential to tear up the world pro ranks in the near future.
The pinoy star lost a contentious split decision at the 2016 Olympics, even though he appeared to win ALL three rounds (and actually was scored that way on one of the judges cards). What was very obvious was that Suarez landed the more telling shots, and further, that he would be way better suited to a longer round format than his tiring rival.
And the opponent? Well here's the kicker !
It was British champion Joe Cordina, who is now 14 and 0 as a pro, and currently sits top twenty in the world!
Charly Suarez is without peer as the Philippines best boxer, his skills are ethereal. He is now fully immersed in the rough and tough pro fight game, and while skills pay the bills, this pursuit is clearly very different to the amateurs!
Suarez tackles a regional title in only his tenth bout, and a big win will no doubt propel him up the world rankings.
Standing in his way?
A young colossus by the name of Tomjune Mangubat, who has vowed to leave Suarez's world aspirations in tatters!

WHAT DOES CHARLY HAVE TO SAY ?
The very talented southpaw Lorence Rosas returned to the ring after an extended break last year, and despite his best laid plans, the comeback proved to present significant challenges!
"The Pride of Palawan" had to overcome a bout of COVID, a cancelled fight, and multiple quarantines, yet still managed to secure fights against two of the very best fighters in the Philippines. Impressively, Rosas took these bouts at a heavier weight class in order to "fight" his way back into the rankings. His most recent performance against giant super featherweight Virgel Vitor was quality, and he gave the top class Bohol boxer total hell from start to finish.
And as if the year hadn't been difficult enough, returning home to Palawan in December had more surprises in store. Typhoon Odette ravaged Puerto Princessa, and unfortunately, the house of the Rosas family was destroyed. While many others spent Christmas around the tree, Lorence languished in a tent!
Onward and upward, and the very resilient Lorence Rosas attacks the new year with renewed zest, returning for TIGER 2022 on March 5th.
This will prove to be a really interesting measure of Rosas, who will drop to the more suitable featherweight division. In fact if things go to plan, expect to see the talented Palawan boxer settle back at 122 pounds in the near future.
With 2021 best forgotten, the exciting news is that the Pride of Palawan is back, and ready to show he belongs.
Stay tuned, with news on an opponent for the slick southpaw Lorence Rosas coming soon!

WAR DOG PRIMED TO STOP SUAREZ
Outstanding prospect Tomjune Mangubat is primed to give a career best performance on March 5th , when he headlines in Paranaque, Manila at “TIGER 2022” .
Mangubat will be fighting for the WBA Asia bragging rights, and the opposition surely doesn’t get any bigger than boxing royalty himself, the “King’s Warror” Charly Suarez. The Cebu based boxer known as “War Dog” heads to Manila armed with not only an intimidating career resume, but a purple patch of recent and devastating victories.
Tomjune Mangubat grew up in the mountains of Bukidnon, Mindanao - a place that has proven to be an assembly line for producing top fighters. Mangubat was top echelon from the start, winning local and national titles before turning pro at the age of 18. And it was no surprise that he would transition seamlessly to the pro ranks. This kid was big and rangy, had plenty of grit, and was rapidly refining his amateur skills to become a hurtful puncher. War Dog quickly earned a reputation as both technical and dangerous, winning 9 of his first 10 fights with thunderous knockouts. The signs were there from the start that the Omega Boxing Gym prodigy was something special. Significantly, he has showed the ominous signs of bigger things to come, and with every match, he has shown constant improvements in all facets of his performance.
Late in 2019, we were given a valuable insight into the mettle of the rapidly improving Mangubat when he suffered a split decision loss to Korea’s #1 fighter Jong Seon Kang.
The match was quality from the opening bell, underscored by a massive work rate and constant power punching by both fighters. Whilst many consider that Mangubat was “very unlucky” not to get the decision, it is worth noting that his Korean opponent was the very same that recently knocked out top class pinoy Pete Apolinar. War Dog was most definitely the dominant fighter in this epic clash, but rather than dwell on the unfortunate scoring, he has simply gone from strength to strength!
Tomjune Mangubat shapes as another significant road block to Charly Suarez’s world title aspirations. His four wins in 2021 foreshadow the destructive form that he will bring to Manila this March. All four were top opponents, yet all received one sided beat downs - three resulting in brutal knockouts. Only the rugged Ernie Sanchez survived on his feet, but it is fair to say that he was comprehensively bashed in an unanimous win for the War Dog.
Mangubat’s most recent performance, significantly, was also his best thus far. The match was held in October last year, against the highly promising and unbeaten Allan Villanueva. This was a keenly anticipated clash in Cebu, as Villanueva had rightful claims to victory, sporting 11 and 0 (8 KO) credentials. But Mangubat was just brutal from the start, mixing technical prowess with hard core physicality. The Bukidnon boy controlled range from the opening bell, setting the tempo going forward, and also on the back foot. He really befuddled Villanueva with wis variety of high and low punches, but it was his quality body punching that really dismantled his opponent, and the match finished with another clinical stoppage for the War Dog.
In what is without doubt the biggest local derby match of the year, you have the Philippines’ best boxer Charly Suarez, taking on perhaps the Philippines’ most dangerous , young and improving fighter in Tomjune Mangubat. Whilst no one disputes the pedigree of Suarez, there are naysayers that maintain he left his assault on the world rankings a little bit too late.
Will this be pivotal match where Suarez shows he is getting a little “old” ?? If there is anyone who can put that theory to the test on March 5th, it is certainly the War Dog Tomjune Mangubat!
